Kenton Welcomes Us

I’ve always loved thrift shopping. At first it was an accessible way for a kid like me to add spice to my wardrobe.  I was allowed one new shopping trip a year, for school clothes.  After that it was up to me to decide what to spend my money on.  Living in Newport, Oregon in the ’90s, there weren’t many new clothes stores around and ultimately I couldn’t have afforded them!  Plus, I love the treasure hunt and the possibility of finding unique things.

Initially I didn’t realize that there was a career for me in the second hand world.  It had become a fun hobby and a thrifty, earth conscious way of shopping.  It wasn’t until after college when I was transitioning into ‘reality’  that I stumbled upon the concept of the consignment store.  What a fun, community based, hands-on, ever changing way to make a living!  I was welcomed as an employee at a local consignment shop in SE Portland and fell in love with the life-style.

When I started planning Give and Take I knew that one of the most important details was finding the perfect location for the store.  A cozy storefront in an up and coming neighborhood with lots of potential and a community of friendly, welcoming people.  Luckily for me a friend of mine had moved to Kenton and mentioned that there were some open storefronts available there.  We spent an afternoon poking around Denver and stopped at Posies for a coffee.  While we were there one of the baristas mentioned that the Kenton Business Association meeting was coming up, and I decided to attend.

It was a perfect fit!  Not only had the KBA had been hoping for more retail in Kenton but a space on the main drag with a fabulous land-lord was just becoming available.  I had found my neighborhood and they were as happy to have me as I was to be there!  Having grown up on the coast I was comforted by the small town vibe in Kenton and also excited about the possibility of growth here due to the MAX and the more affordable housing in North Portland.

I am enjoying watching Give & Take grow and evolve together with Kenton!
